How to Beat Orin the Red in Baldur’s Gate 3

The Baldur’s Gate 3 Orin the Red boss fight happens in the Undercity Ruins, which is connected to the Lower City Sewers. You’ll likely do a few quests along the way:

How to Rescue Orin’s Victim

Moreover, an incident will occur during one of your long rests in Act 3. Orin, ever the cunning shapeshifter, will turn into one of your companions, and she’ll attempt to kill a kid. If you see through this deception, it’s revealed that your companion has been kidnapped. Our guess is that this is the party member with the lowest approval at the time. For us, it was Lae’zel.

In any case, once we cleared the Murder Tribunal, the game told us that Orin might not like what we did, so it’s imperative that we rescue our companion. We only did one long rest (we were thinking that an untoward incident might occur, and we didn’t want to cause time to advance further).

Upon reaching the Bhaal Temple in the Undercity Ruins, we found Lae’zel knocked out cold on an altar, ready to be sacrificed. Be sure to pre-buff with elixirs and spells (i.e. Guidance) since you’ll be presented with a skill check: DC25 Deception, Intimidation, or Persuasion. Succeeding makes Orin ignore her would-be victim to focus on you instead.

Orin the Red Boss Fight (Dark Urge Duel)

After the back-and-forth conversation with Orin, you’ll commence with the bout. Take note that we only did the Baldur’s Gate 3 Orin the Red boss fight as a Dark Urge character. Here’s what you need to know:

This turned into a one-on-one duel. Neither teammates nor cultists were allowed to interfere. If you attempt to attack or heal with a party member, the cultists will all turn hostile, and they’ll buff Orin non-stop.Since you can’t rely on teammates, we suggest pre-buffing with advantage/roll-boosting spells (i.e. Bless)–anything that lasts for several turns.Orin turns into a Slayer, which has deadly bleed-inflicting attacks, as well as leaps that can knock you down. Our main character is a Way of the Four Elements Monk, which made the fight ridiculously easy. We had a lot of ki points, so we kept using Stunning Strike (Unarmed), followed by Flurry of Blows. This prevented Orin from attacking on her turn, while we did a lot of damage.

Boss Fight Rewards

After the Baldur’s Gate 3 Orin the Red boss fight, you’ll receive the following rewards:

Legendary: Crimson Mischief – 10-23 piercing and necrotic damage; additional 1-4 damage against targets with 50% HP or less; +2 weapon enchantment; attacks made with advantage cause +7 damage; as an off-hand weapon, you can add your ability modifier to your damage roll.Legendary: Netherstone-Pommeled Bloodthirst – 9-19 piercing and necrotic damage; lowers the number needed to roll a critical; +2 weapon enchantment; True Strike cantrip; creatures hit with this weapon become vulnerable to piercing damage; as an off-hand weapon, you can retaliate and gain True Strike against enemies that miss you with their melee attacks; +1 AC via Bound Weapon (off-hand).Inspirations: Putting the Past to Rest (Soldier).

Dark Urge Dilemma: Accept or Reject Bhaal’s Gift

Still, there are other facets that you might want to learn, assuming you picked the Dark Urge origin. We’re delving deeper into spoiler territory here, so read at your own risk.

After defeating Orin in Baldur’s Gate 3, a cutscene will play. Your butler, Scleritas Fel, is impaled, and Bhaal speaks through his corpse. You’re then asked if you want to become Bhaal’s Chosen, or if you want to reject your Father’s gift entirely.

Become Bhaal’s Chosen

Example Responses: “I accept your gift, Lord Bhaal,” “I understand now, in your name, Father, it will be done,” and “I don’t have a choice, it seems.”Inspiration: Return of the Bhaalspawn (Haunted One).Action: Slayer Form – Turn into a deadly Slayer monster once per long rest.Spell: Power Word Kill – Instantly kills an enemy with 100 HP or lower; limited to a single use only.

Both Jaheira and Minsc will leave your party for good, which makes sense given that the duo fought Bhaal’s lackeys in the previous games. But, that’s not all: as you leave the temple, the two will ambush you alongside the Harpers. You have no choice but to kill them. Your other companions won’t like your decision, but they’ll stay in your team. The same also applies to Orin’s intended victim (i.e. Lae’zel in our playthrough), as she just stayed anyway.

Reject Bhaal

Example Responses: “I refuse, I will be free of you,” “I will not stand for that,” The only family I know are those who fight by my side.”Helm: Gibus of the Worshipful Servant – At the start of combat, gain momentum equal to your Charisma modifier; gain advantage on concentration saving throws; dropped by Scleritas Fel.Inspiration: Bhaalspawn No More (Haunted One).

Bhaal will kill your character instantly. Thankfully, Withers the hooded skeleton shows up. He believes you are a true champion, and you’ve proven yourself by making a stand against true evil. He revives you and, finally, you’re free of the Dark Urge curse. Everyone congratulates you because you made the right choice.

In any case, we hope this whopping guide tells you everything you need to know about the Orin boss in Baldur’s Gate 3. We also encourage you to try the Dark Urge origin, as we think that it’s an amazing redemption arc that has to be experienced in a campaign.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is filled to the brim with activities and secrets. You’ll no doubt be part of an adventure that can take countless hours to complete. For other tips, you can visit our BG3 guides hub.
