It’s been reported that Joker 2 will have some musical elements, but is the movie a full-on musical? Star Zazie Beetz has commented on this, saying in an interview that people “will be surprised” by the kind of movie that Joker 2–which is officially called Joker: Folie a Deux–turns out to be.
“I don’t think it’s going to be what they expect, around it being musical,” Beetz told Variety. “We all sort of express musically and dancing in our lives day-to-day. I think it’s going to work really well.”
In 2022, reports suggested that the Joker sequel might be a full-on musical, but that was walked back somewhat later. It’s been more recently reported that it is more akin to A Star is Born, in that it will have some musical elements but is not a traditional musical.
Joker 2 stars Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. She is an accomplished, Oscar-winning actress and singer, so it makes sense to utilize her talents with some musical elements in the sequel. She also played a lead role in A Star is Born, which was produced by Joker director Todd Phillips.
Very little is known about the plot for Joker 2, but it’s rumored to take place in part inside Arkham Asylum. Joaquin Phoenix, who won an Oscar for 2018’s Joker, returns to play the Clown Prince of Crime and is reportedly being paid $20 million.
Joker 2 is set for release in October 2024. The next big DC movie is The Flash, which hits theaters this Friday, June 16.
