Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Devs Discuss Memeified Border Crossing Map: "We Try To Have A Balance"

Not every Call Of Duty map can be a hit, but one from Modern Warfare 2 was so derided by the game’s community that it became a meme: Santa Sena Border Crossing. In a new interview with Dexerto, Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer design director Geoff Smith explained that the map was designed to be more “experiential” than competitive, and that it was inspired in part by the acclaimed movie Sicario.

If you haven’t played the map, there’s one core reason for its unpopularity: cars. The map is essentially one narrow road that is blockaded with many cars of the Call of Duty persuasion, meaning all of them can explode from bullets or grenades for a one-hit kill. Though some enjoyed the map’s chaotic charm, others expressed frustration with its seemingly random outcomes.

“Map-wise, we try to have a balance between experiential maps and the more competitive maps,” Smith told Dexerto. “Not all of them are super sweaty, balanced ones. There’s ones where ‘hey, it’d be really cool to fight over a border crossing.’ And I know that map’s not super popular in certain groups, but we like to keep it fun and it’s really neat to move through those cars, channeling Sicario. So we try to keep it fun and switch it up, but there’s a balance.”

Smith later said that the team considered removing the car explosions from round-based modes like Search And Destroy because it got “really old.” He further joked that the team “isn’t trying to ruin people’s fun on every single map.”

In other Call of Duty news, a recent report suggests that the next game in the series will be Modern Warfare 3, and it’s coming this November.
