Super Mario Bros. Movie Is 6th Highest-Grossing Video Game Movie Ever After Just 5 Days

The Super Mario Bros. Movie from Minions studio Illumination and Nintendo is soaring at the box office. Through its first five days, the movie has earned more than $377 million worldwide.

That’s enough to make it the sixth highest-grossing video game movie of all time. Again, the movie needed only five days to reach that level and set that record. The movie is performing better in the US ($204.6 million) than internationally ($173 million), which is a good sign for the film and the movie studio behind it.

For comparison, the highest-grossing video game movie all time is Warcraft, which earned $439 million worldwide. It made just $47 million in the US, though, with the remaining $391 million, or 89.2% of its total box office grosses, coming from international markets.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is now the highest-grossing video game movie of all time domestically. The previous record-holder was Sonic the Hedgehog 2 ($190.5 million).

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is not getting great reviews from professional critics, but people fans are loving it–the movie has an impressive 96% user score on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie also has a mighty A rating on CinemaScore.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie features Chris Pratt as the voice of Mario, along with Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, and Jack Black as Bowser. Charles Martinet, who voices Mario in the games, has multiple roles in the movie.
