YouTuber Remakes The Simpsons: Hit & Run From Scratch

Back in June 2022, YouTuber Reubs uploaded a video showing how they remade most of the 2003 game The Simpsons: Hit & Run from scratch in only a week. In the past few months, however, Reubs has taken to improving their remake in every possible way, including new models, better vehicle physics, and adding the missions from the original.

In the most recent episode, Reubs said that the remake is now approaching completion. The content creator spends the episode showing how they filled in the gaps in the game’s map of Springfield. Unfortunately, though it’s clear that a lot of work has gone into the project, the developer has stated it’s unlikely that it’ll ever be available for public consumption due to copyright issues.

That said, Reubs has documented almost every aspect of the project on their YouTube channel, so you can appreciate it that way. There’s another developer, El Gato Del Tejado, working on a remake of Hit & Run, and they’re animating the game’s 3D in-engine cutscenes in the classic Simpsons style, which is an interesting twist.

Widely considered the best Simpsons tie-in game of all time–though its only main competition is Konami’s arcade beat-’em-up from the ’90s–The Simpsons: Hit & Run received positive reviews when it came out 20 years ago. Its immediate predecessor, The Simpsons: Road Rage, was so close to Crazy Taxi in gameplay and mechanics that Sega sued publisher EA for copyright infringement, though it was later settled out of court.
