Ubisoft Cancels Project Q, A PvP Battle Arena Game Announced In 2022

Ubisoft’s Project Q, the team battle arena game that is “not a battle royale,” has been canceled. Ubisoft officially announced Project Q in April 2022 and opened up playtest registrations.

Insider Gaming first spotted Project Q’s cancellation via a notice in the playtest Discord. In the #announcement channel, Ubisoft thanked the playtesters but also stated that Project Q “will no longer continue development.” Project Q’s Discord channel will also be closed.

Now Playing: Skull and Bones Full Presentation | Ubisoft Foward

“The first closed test was a great milestone for us because of all the work put in from the team, your amazing support, and your great reception! We loved the amazing energy on this discord, it was our fuel for the project. Your feedback was a true gift and allowed us to grow as developers in order to do our best for you, our players,” the Discord announcement (via Insider Gaming) read. “All these warm moments make this announcement harder to make: sadly we have to cancel our upcoming closed tests as Project Q will no longer continue development. This also means that we will need to shut down this Discord server.”

The cancellation was later confirmed to VGC, with Ubisoft telling the site that it “will no longer support the development of Project Q in order to focus on priority projects, to which our teams are being reallocated.”

Project Q’s cancellation comes after Ubisoft confirmed it would cancel a slate of projects due to disappointing sales from recent releases and the holiday season. As for what those projects are, Ubisoft said the list included three unannounced projects and four announced projects. Project Q is likely one of the four announced games. Skull and Bones–to no surprise–has been further delayed, and a new target release date is currently unknown.

Regarding Ubisoft’s troubled financial state, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot sent an internal email that was poorly received by employees. Workers of Ubisoft Paris are planning a strike and the Ubisoft Paris chapter of Solidaries Informatique released a statement demanding increased salaries, an end to abusive management policies, transparency, and a four-day work week.
