Community Movie Starts Shooting This Summer

The Community movie sounds like it’s one step closer to becoming a reality–along with the rallying cry “six seasons and a movie.” Actor Joel McHale recently stated that shooting for the film will start in June while appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

According to Collider, McHale appeared on Kimmel’s show to promote his upcoming series Animal Control (which will air on Fox). Kimmel took the opportunity to mention that McHale previously performed with a monkey on Community and asked about any updates on the film.

“We are, we’re making the Community movie in June, so… thanks for remembering,” McHale replied. He didn’t say much more about the film, other than confirming that “Ken Jeong’s gonna be in it.”

The Community movie was officially announced in September. The film will launch on the streaming service Peacock, featuring McHale, Jeong, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, and Jim Rash. There are obviously some notable names missing there–including Donald Glover, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Chevy Chase–so it’s unknown if they may appear in the movie.

The TV series premiered in September 2009 and ran for five seasons on NBC. The short-lived Yahoo Screen aired the final sixth season in 2015. Glover and Brown were regulars for Community until the final season, while Chase had a contentious breakup during Season 4. He did appear in a short cameo role the following season. That said, his appearance in the upcoming movie would be surprising.

No plot details or release date have been revealed for the Community film. All six seasons of the show are currently available to stream on Netflix and Hulu.
