Avatar 5 Will Go To Earth, If It Gets Made

Avatar: The Way of Water hasn’t officially opened up to wide audiences yet, but that’s not stopping director James Cameron and producer Jon Landau from teasing the fifth–yes, fifth!– entry in the franchise. The focus of the films so far is on Pandora and its rare resource unobtainium. But the spotlight could shift to Earth eventually.

Speaking to Gizmodo, Landau explained what we could see if Avatar 5 gets made. “Well, it’s funny. I wasn’t going to talk about it, but I’ve now subsequently heard that Jim [Cameron] has talked about it a little bit,” Landau said. “In movie five there is a section of the story where we go to Earth. And we go to it to open people’s eyes, open Neytiri’s eyes, to what exists on Earth.”

Changing the setting is apparently related to Neytiri’s character arc, according to Landau. “Just like you’re defined by the choices you make in life, not all humans are bad. Not all Na’vi are good. And that’s the case here on Earth,” he said. “And we want to expose Neytiri to that.”

As a reminder, Neytiri is a princess and love interest of Jake Sully in the original Avatar. She’s portrayed by Zoe Saldana and returns in The Way of Water.

This isn’t the first time Cameron and his team have opened up about Avatar 4 and 5. For instance, the director recently said that an executive responded, “Holy f**k!” after reading the script for the fourth film. Cameron has even had his on expletive for that movie, calling it a “motherf**ker” if it actually releases. That’s all depending on the market reception to The Way of Water and the third film, he said.

As for Avatar: The Way of Water, Cameron recently boasted the movie’s visual effects blow away what the Marvel Cinematic Universe is doing. Audiences will get to decide for themselves as the sequel releases this Friday, December 16.
