Hulu series The Great, an ahistorical and satirical dramedy about Catherine the Great’s rise to power against all odds has been renewed for Season 3, according to Variety.
The renewal announcement comes after Season 2 wrapped on the streaming service back on November 19. In Season 2, Catherine (Elle Fanning) finally takes the Russian throne, but wrestles with newfound feelings for her recently couped husband Peter III (Nicholas Hoult), and deals with the chaos caused by her mother Joanna’s (Gillian Anderson) visit.
In addition to Fanning (20th Century Women), Hoult (X-Men: First Class), and Anderson (The X-Files, The Crown), series regulars include Phoebe Fox (Black Mirror), Adam Godley (The X-Files: I Want to Believe), Gwilym Lee (Bohemian Rhapsody), Charity Wakefield (Day of the Flowers), Douglas Hodge (Joker), Sacha Dhawan (Line of Duty), and Belinda Bromilow (Packed to the Rafters).
The Great is created, written, and executive produced by Tony McNamara–who is also a co-writer on the live-action Cruella movie. Both Fanning and Hoult also executive produce in addition to starring. On Rotten Tomatoes, the critical consensus of the show from 27 reviewers places Season 2 of the series at an impressive 100%.
Seasons 1 and 2 of The Great can be streamed on Hulu. Season 3’s premiere date has yet to be announced.
