Google Play Announces Best Of Play 2021 Winners, Pokemon Unite Wins Best Game

Google Play has unveiled its Best of Play 2021 winners–selected by the Google Play editorial team with a few Users’ Choice winners selected by fans–with Pokemon Unite and more games capturing top honors.

The new Pokemon MOBA game earned the Best Game of 2021 honor, clinching its first major award of the 2021 end-of-year awards season. Garena Free Fire–one of the largest games in the world with a peak of over 150 millions daily users as of August–was selected as the 2021 Users’ Choice game.

Masaaki Hoshino, a producer on Pokemon Unite, commented on the distinction, saying, “We tried to distill the best parts of the MOBA genre to create a new kind of game, but I must admit that I was unsure if it would be well received by players around the world. This award shows that our game has been positively received by fans and the media, and while this is a great relief, at the same time it reaffirms our determination to continue doing our best to make Pokémon UNITE an even more exciting experience that meets our players’ expectations.”

Other selected games include League of Legends: Wild Rift and Marvel: Future Revolution on the Best Competitive Games list, Donut County and My Friend Pedro on the Best Indies list, and Crash Bandicoot: On The Run on the Best Pick Up And Play list.

Non-gaming apps that won awards include Balance as Best App, Disney+ on the Popular on Google TV list, and Paramount+ as the Users’ Choice app. The full list of winners is below.
