The hit disaster movie Greenland is getting a sequel. Variety reports that Gerard Butler will return for the follow-up, which will be titled Greenland: Migration.
Greenland: Migration will reunite Butler with co-star Morena Baccarin. The pair play John and Allison Garrity, a married couple who have survived the worldwide devastation created by a comet crashing to the Earth by escaping to Greenland with their young son. The new film will focus on their attempts to cross the dangerous frozen wastes of Europe to find a new home. It will be written by Chris Sparling once more, with director Ric Roman Waugh also returning. The film is set to start production in 2022.
In a statement, Waugh said, “Greenland spoke to our humanity in the middle of a global catastrophic event, highlighting what people are capable of doing to one another, both good and bad, when it’s life or death. The irony is we made the first film pre-Covid and watched many situations come to reality. I’m really looking forward to the next chapter of the Garritys post the first extinction event.”
Greenland was a surprise international success last year when it opened theatrically. In the US, it was originally set for a theatrical release in June, but was delayed several times by distributors STX before a digital-only release was set for December. The movie topped both the Apple and Google Play charts at a premium $20 rental price. While it’s hard to assess on demand numbers, a report in IndieWire suggests that it made $60 million-$80 million in the US alone, from a relatively modest production budget of $35 million.
