Showtime has confirmed recent rumors and reports that in the upcoming Dexter revival season, the titular forensic technician with a passion for vigilante murder on the side will be assuming a new identity. Say goodbye to Dexter Morgan, say hello to Jim Lindsay–a sales associate at Fred’s Fish & Game somewhere in upstate New York.
Aside from letting it be known that the show is coming back sometime this fall, has a new setting, and a few additions to the cast, both Showtime and Dexter producers have mostly vocal about the lengths they’re going to prevent leaks about the 10-part limited series. The creative forces behind the show clearly want to avoid spoilers getting out ahead of time, but have seen fit to share this bit of information on Twitter–check it out below.
Actor Jamie Chung, who plays a famous true crime podcaster named Molly, has also revealed that fans should expect a “darker” aesthetic when the show comes back. Said Chung, “The original series happened over 10 years ago, so there’s certainly a different vibe.” It isn’t known whether Molly’s podcast is investigating (or celebrating) Morgan’s crimes. It might be worth following writer Scott Reynolds’s Twitter, as moments before Showtime officially shared this information, the writer shared some redacted script pages also offering clues about Dexter’s new identity.
Something pretty major that is known, however, is that the revival will not be retconning the controversial 2013 ending to the show that saw him (spoiler alert) killing his adopted sister, faking his own death, and moving to Oregon to become a lumberjack. But seeing as how Dexter now is living somewhere completely different, in a totally different line of work, and has a new name–it’s dubious how much his past will come up, anyway.
