The first trailer for the Matt Damon movie Stillwater has landed. The Oscar-winner plays the role of an oil rig worker from Oklahoma who travels to France to try to rescue his daughter from prison for a crime she believes she did not commit.
Stillwater is directed by Tom McCarthy, whose 2015 film Spotlight won Best Picture and Best Writing, Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards.
In the trailer, we’re introduced to Damon’s character, Bill, a plaid-wearing, goatee-having oil rig worker who travels to Marseille to help his estranged daughter, Allison, get out of prison for murder. His daughter is played by Abigail Breslin, who earned an Academy Award back in 2007 for Little Miss Sunshine.
“Confronted with language barriers, cultural differences, and a complicated legal system, Bill builds a new life for himself in France as he makes it his personal mission to exonerate his daughter,” reads a line from the movie’s description.
Stillwater premieres in theaters on July 30.
It’s just one of Damon’s major movies in the works for the next couple of years. He also stars alongside Ben Affleck and Jodie Comer in Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel this year, while Damon is currently in Australia filming Thor: Love and Thunder for 2022.
