Netflix Releases Trailer For Oxygen, Its New Sci-Fi Thriller

Netflix has released the first trailer for Oxygen, an upcoming French survival sci-fi thriller. The film is due to hit the streaming service on May 12.

Directed by Alexandre Aja (High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes), the film looks to be a horror reimagining and homage to 2001: A Space Odyssey. Oxygen, which until this past February was originally titled O2, centers on Liz, a woman who awakes in some sort of high-tech cryogenic pod, only able to speak with an AI companion. The film’s terse synopsis reads: “No escape, no memory, 90 minutes to live. Liz is running out of oxygen and time, [and] in order to survive she must find a way to remember who she is.” Check out the trailer below.

Written by Christie LeBlanc (How to Make a Reality Star, Road Trip), Oxygen is co-produced by Aja and Vincent Maraval, Brahim Chioua, Noëmie Devide, and Gregory Levasseur. Maxime Alexandre (Shazam!, The Haunting of Bly Manor) serves as the cinematographer. Mélanie Laurent (Inglourious Basterds) stars as Liz, with Mathieu Amalric (The French Dispatch) and Malik Zidi (Play) filling out the rest of the barebones cast.

As has been widely reported and announced in advance, Netflix is making a concerted effort to continue to increase its output of original content. It recently proclaimed it will be spending $17 billion on original content for 2021 alone, clearly intent on keeping its 208 million paid subscribers with their wide-ranging tastes and interests.
