Getsufumaden: Undying Moon Remakes The Konami Classic For PC, Switch

Konami has announced a remake of its 1987 action-platformer Getsu Fuuma Den. Developed by GuruGuru, Getsufumaden: Undying Moon is a 2D action-roguevania that launches in Steam Early Access on May 13 and Nintendo Switch in 2022.

Getsufumaden: Undying Moon, unveiled during Nintendo’s recent Indie World showcase, updates the original’s sprite-based graphics to a style influenced by Ukiyo-e art, giving it a classical Japanese aesthetic.

On top of updating the visuals, Undying Moon adopts some modern gameplay principles like metroidvania elements and roguelike design. The game features a variety of ever-changing dungeons as players pick up several weapons, ranging from expected tools such as katanas to more obtuse armaments like paper fans. And of course, there are a plethora of massive, screen-sized bosses to fight.

The original Getsu Fuuma Den launched on the Famicom in 1987 but was exclusive to Japan, making it difficult to get overseas. Those that buy the Steam Early Access version of the remake will get the Famicom original as a bonus. Additionally, the Steam Early Access version comes with a digital artbook and original mini soundtrack. It’s unclear if these will be available for Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo unveiled a plethora of titles during its latest Indie World livestream, including Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals and OlliOlli World. There are also a few games revealed during the showcase that are available to download right now on the console-handheld hybrid, such as Fez and There Is No Game: Wrong Dimension.
