Update: The full-length Space Jam: A New Legacy trailer is out now, and you can watch it below. If you ever wanted to see LeBron James and Don Cheadle in a scene together, you’re probably not going to get a better chance.
Original story follows…
Space Jam: A New Legacy has just gotten a new, quick teaser teasing the fact that a full-length, proper trailer will be released this coming Saturday, April 3. After recently getting a run of announcements involving character posters, first images, a video game, and even a line of collectibles, Saturday should help fill in the rest of the blanks. Check out the clip below.
What’s been noticeably missing from all the announcements and stills is a sense of the movie’s tone and how the animation will mesh with actors–crucial to any movie like this, but especially important for a movie looking to extend Space Jam’s legacy. Hopefully, this next trailer will offer that. The plot’s broad strokes are at this point known: “During a trip to the Warner Bros. studio, NBA superstar LeBron James and his son accidentally get trapped within a world that contains all of Warner Bros.’ stories and characters… to get back home, LeBron and the Tunes have to unravel [a] mysterious plan and win an epic basketball game.”
Other details have come out, too, like how a CGI humanoid named AI G Rhythm (Don Cheadle) basically lures James and his son in to settle a dispute over followers on social media. In addition to all the cartoony elements–including that detail–the film is also expected to have surprising emotional depth. “We go deeper and attempt to hug at the heartstrings,” director Malcolm D. Lee said in a recent Entertainment Weekly interview. In that same piece, Cheadle adds that James has “more acting to do” than Michael Jordan did in the original.
Space Jam: A New Legacy will be in theaters and HBO Max on July 16.
