HBO Asia has reported its HBO GO service has experienced “an unprecedented surge in traffic for the exclusive premiere of Zack Snyder’s Justice League,” apparently crashing the platform in the region. The outage was self-reported on Facebook earlier on March 18, which is, of course, the long anticipated release date for the director’s four-hour redux realizing his original vision for Justice League.
After an outage that lasted roughly two hours, HBO Asia again reported on Facebook that “service has resumed,” along with expressing gratitude to audiences for being patient. As Variety reported last year, WarnerMedia’s HBO GO streaming service has been actively expanding deeper into Asian markets, with a particular focus on mid-sized markets like Taiwan and the Philippines.
It’s unclear from the Facebook posts which regions were affected, and whether customers were only unable to access Justice League or the service overall. Multiple Facebook comments on both posts mentioned above report running into “timeout” and “bad gateways” errors–but as Tim Keel points out in one comment, “It’s a server overload. [HBO is] not freaking running on NASA super servers.”
According to Metacritic, reviews are still largely mixed for the new film. As of this writing, the review aggregator clocks the film with a 57 based on 38 critic reviews.
