Brooklyn Nine-Nine Is Ending After Season 8

The end is in sight for Brooklyn Nine-Nine. NBC has announced that the police comedy will come to an end with its upcoming eighth season, which is expected later this year.

The series has had a roller coaster ride of a journey, as it was canceled by Fox after five seasons before NBC picked it up for seasons 6-8. The show is now ending amid renewed discussion and controversy regarding the American police system.

In the wake of George Floyd’s death in 2020, the cast and crew made a $100,000 donation to the National Bail Fund Network, and the final season will address some of these current events.

“We’ve always loved these characters and the way they make us laugh while also masterfully weaving in storylines that make us reflect as well,” NBC boss Lisa Katz said, as reported by Variety.

The show stars an ensemble cast that includes Andy Samberg, Terry Crews, Melissa Fumero, Stephanie Beatriz, Andre Braugher, Joe Lo Truglio, Dirk Blocker, and Joel McKinnon Miller. Comedy veteran Dan Goor is the showrunner.

Pearlena Igbokwe, the head of NBC owner Universal Studio Group, praised Goor in particular for continuing to push the envelope with Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

“A special thanks to our brilliant showrunner Dan Goor, who could have rested on his laurels after season one but never took his foot off the hilarious gas pedal,” she said. “B99, it’s been NOICE!”

As for Goor, he said in his own statement that he feels “incredibly lucky” to have been able to work with the cast and crew of Brooklyn Nine-Nine for so long.

“They are not only among the most talented people in the business, they are all good human beings who have become a family. But most of all, I feel lucky that we have had the best fans in the world,” he said. “Fans who literally saved us from cancellation. Fans who fill us with joy. Ending the show was a difficult decision, but ultimately, we felt it was the best way to honor the characters, the story and our viewers. I know some people will be disappointed it’s ending so soon, but honestly, I’m grateful it lasted this long. Title of my sex tape.”
