Netflix Announces Layoffs And Restructuring

Netflix has become just the latest media and technology giant to announce layoffs. Deadline reports that a “major restructure” is underway within Netflix, and that 15 people from the company’s film division are being let go.

This reported restructuring comes not long after Dan Lin became the new head of Netflix’s film division, taking over for Scott Stuber, who left to start his own company.

As part of the new organizational shift, Netflix’s movie division will be broken down into genre, with bosses for each major unit. Ori Marmur will lead action, fantasy, horror, and sci-fi; Kira Goldberg is heading up thrillers, drama, and family films; Niija Kuykendall is taking the lead on young adult, holiday, and faith-based movies; and Jason Young is running the comedy and rom-com team within Netflix. These changes have been in the works for the past month, Deadline reported.

Netflix employs more than 10,000 people across its film, TV, technology, and gaming divisions. Gaming is one of Netflix’s newest units and has been making key hiring announcements of late, including former Halo boss Joe Staten. He’s making new multiplatform AAA IP.

Layoffs have rocked numerous media, technology, and gaming companies in 2024. The video game industry has seen more than 8,000 layoffs so far in 2024, while semiconductor company Intel just recently announced cuts as well.
