Nintendo Switch Could Dethrone The PS2 As The Best-Selling Console Of All Time In 2025

While sales might be slowing down, the Nintendo Switch still looks set to break a longstanding record as it steadily climbs upward. In its new financial report for the three months ending December 31, 2023, Nintendo says it sold 13.74 million Switch units, bringing the lifetime sales total of the console to 139.36 million.

In Japan, the Switch has officially outsold the Nintendo DS (32.98 million) with 33.34 million lifetime sales to date. Nintendo predicts that global Switch lifetime sales–for the OLED, regular, and Lite models–will reach 141.12 million units sold by March 2024, and it has revised its sales forecast for the current financial year, predicting an increase from 15 million unit sales to 15.5 million.

Currently, the Switch comfortably holds the position of the third-best-selling console of all time, and if the Nintendo sales forecast is accurate, it’ll eventually beat the global lifetime sales of the Nintendo DS (154 million). If the Switch can do that, it’ll be within spitting distance of dethroning the PlayStation 2 (155 million), as Sony’s console has held onto the top spot for many years.

Nintendo will release Princess Peach: Showtime and Mario vs. Donkey Kong in the first half of the year. Splatoon 3 will also receive new Expansion Pass content and other anticipated games for the system include Unicorn Overlord, Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD, and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

As for the Switch 2, Nintendo is remaining tight-lipped on its next gaming console. During the financial briefing, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa explained that the current Switch family of consoles will be Nintendo’s “main business” heading into 2024.
