Fortnite Is Fixing Those Expensive Car Prices, Refunds Coming

One of the new games that launched inside Fortnite last week, Psyonix’s Rocket Racing, made waves for the wrong reasons when its slate of cosmetics came with extra-steep prices–but that’s about to change, because Epic is permanently adjusting the prices downward on all Rocket Racing cars.

The uncommon (green) rarity cars will now cost 1,500 V-Bucks, down from 2,500, and the rare (blue) ones are going from 4,000 V-Bucks down to 2,500. The only rare car currently in the shop, the Diesel, was technically the most expensive major cosmetic in the whole game that you could buy with V-Bucks, with 4,000 converting to about $30 or more, depending on a few factors. It’s worth noting that these cars are cross-buy with Rocket League, so the pricing made more sense for those who also play that game.

For those who have already purchased one or more of these cars, you’ll get a refund for the difference in price within a week, Epic says.

It’s extremely unusual for Epic to ever adjust the V-Buck prices of any cosmetics–this is the first time I’ve ever heard of it happening. Fortnite currently has lower standard prices on items than it did in the early years, when it would feature skins for 2,000 V-Bucks–something Epic only does with the occasional collaboration skin now, like Goku.

But while Epic has adjusted the cost of purchasing V-Bucks twice since Fortnite launched in 2017, it has never adjusted the prices on those old items directly. Instead, the standard practice has been to toss expensive old items into rather generous new bundles, like the extremely good Alien Abduction bundle.

Alongside Rocket Racing, the rhythm game Fortnite Festival also launched last weekend with its own slate of questionably priced cosmetics, like a 1500-V-Buck guitar. Epic hasn’t made any announcement about adjusting those prices, though.
