Hideo Kojima And A24 Are Teaming Up To Create A Death Stranding Film Universe

Film and television company A24 has announced that it’ll be working with Kojima Productions to produce a live-action adaptation of Death Stranding. The news was announced through A24’s store and Twitter account, as the company debuted a new black T-shirt that features its logo rendered with Death Stranding elements.

“It’s official: we’ve partnered with Kojima Productions on the live-action feature film adaptation of Hideo Kojima’s acclaimed video game, Death Stranding,” reads the description for the T-shirt. A Death Stranding film was first announced to be in development back in 2022, but at the time, further details on it remained a secret.

“A24 was born into this world about 10 years ago, their presence is singular within the industry, they are like no other,” Kojima wrote in a blog post detailing the decision to partner with the indie film studio. “Their innovative approach to storytelling aligns with what Kojima Productions has been doing for the last eight years. Now, we are making a Death Stranding movie together. There are a lot of ‘game adaptation films’ out there but what we are creating is not just a direct translation of the game. The intention is that our audience will not only be fans of the games, but our film will be for anyone who loves cinema. We are creating a Death Stranding universe that has never been seen before, achievable only through the medium of film, it will be born.”

Death Stranding was the first game from Kojima Productions–the studio set up by Hideo Kojima after he left Konami several years ago–and is set in a world where humanity is on the brink of destruction following an extinction-level event that ravaged the planet, introduced dangerous phantoms to the world, and made being caught out in the rain a death sentence. As Sam Porter, players got to explore this harsh new frontier while staying one step ahead of danger with the use of a Bridge Baby, an unborn child contained in a pod strapped to the chest of Porter.

Kojima’s game also featured several big Hollywood names, with Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, and Léa Seydoux all lending their voices and likenesses to their respective characters. Back in 2021, Kojima Productions announced the formation of a new business division focused on film, TV, and music, and in 2022, Death Stranding 2 was officially revealed. As for Kojima, he has stated in previous interviews that he’ll be involved in the Death Stranding film adaptation but he won’t be directing it. The game developer also announced his new Xbox game OD at The Game Awards, and this project is being developed in collaboration with Oscar-winning director Jordan Peele.
