It’s been a big year for Andrew Garfield, between his Oscar nominated performance in Tick, Tick … Boom!, his surprise (or not so surprising) appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and many other projects besides. So what’s next for the actor? A break is planned, Garfield has told Variety in an interview.
Garfield’s latest project is a limited series for FX called Under The Banner of Heaven, due to premiere this week. Based on the Jon Krakauer book of the same name, the series follows Garfield as a Mormon detective investigating a murder perpetrated by LDS fundamentalists. With such heavy material to work with, Garfield said he had to make sure to take care of himself when off set.

Now Playing: Who Is The Best Spider-Man? Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield Or Tom Holland
“I think it was actually a necessity for us to have game nights and go into nature and hike and you know, swim and dive and lakes and dance and eat good food so that we could really come back and fully give ourselves [to the work],” he explained. “We had to keep on taking care of ourselves so that we can take care of the story.”
When asked what was next up after the true crime series, Garfield told Variety that he was in for a much-needed break.
“I’m going to rest for a little bit,” Garfield said. “I need to recalibrate and reconsider what I want to do next and who I want to be and just be a bit of a person for awhile. Because as you know, that is a washing machine, that awards season. I need to just be a bit ordinary for a while.”
Garfield was in the running for Best Actor at this year’s Oscars for his performance as Rent writer Jonathan Larson in Tick, Tick… Boom!, a role that also netted him a Golden Globe. Garfield also saw acclaim for his role as televangelist Jim Bakker in The Eyes Of Tammy Faye.
While a rest may be on the cards for now, that doesn’t mean garfield isn’t planning for the future. As recently as this January, Garfield expressed interest in appearing in future Spider-Man titles, “if it felt right.”
