After playing bit parts in films, Andrew Garfield gained worldwide recognition for following in the footsteps of Tobey Maguire in Sony’s reboot of their Spider-Man films. However, much like Maguire, Garfield never completed his series with both Spider-Man 4 and Amazing Spider-Man 3 shelved in favor of the wall-crawler joining Marvel Studios proper. While Maguire has turned in costume for good, Garfield would suit up again if the timing was right.
Talking to Esquire while promoting his upcoming A24 feature We Live in Time, the Oscar-nominated actor said that coming back for Spider-Man: No Way Home felt therapeutic in its own right, and felt like he could don the web-shooters once again.
“I would 100 percent come back if it was the right thing, if it’s additive to the culture, if there’s a great concept or something that hasn’t been done before that’s unique and odd and exciting, and that you can sink your teeth into,” he said. “I love that character, and it brings joy. If part of what I bring is joy, then I’m joyful in return.”
While fans are still a few years away from the next Tom Holland Spider-Man adventure, Garfield insists that the team-up was a one-time thing and currently has no plans for him to return on that side of Spider-Man.
“I mean, like the internet is a big place,” Garfield said in September. “I think there’s a lot of people who will just say anything to get clicks. So you might have been duped, I’m afraid.”
We Live in Time opens in theaters on October 11 and became a meme sensation due to a carousel horse in the movie poster.
