Antonio Banderas Joins Indiana Jones 5

Actor Antonio Banderas has been named Harrison Ford’s newest co-star in the next Indiana Jones film, which still doesn’t yet have a title. The casting announcement was first reported by Deadline, though it hasn’t been revealed who Banderas will be playing or how heavily his character will feature in the film.

For that matter, pretty much everything in the film’s plot is under wraps. All we know for sure so far is that Indiana Jones 5 recently began filming in the UK, and that its cast also includes Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Hannibal actor Mads Mikkelsen. Boyd Holbrook, Shaunette Renee Wilson, and Thomas Kretschmann will also co-star. The movie is being directed by James Mangold (Logan, Ford vs. Ferrari), who took over for Steven Spielberg after he dropped out, making Indiana Jones 5 the first entry in the entire series to not be directed by him.

Images of Ford from the set recently emerged, showing the 78-year-old actor in costume. In late June, Ford reportedly injured his shoulder while rehearsing a fight scene for Indiana Jones 5–though it was not expected to affect production in any significant manner, with filming to shift course around the actor while treatment was evaluated.

There’s still a ways to go before the film will be out. Currently, Indiana Jones 5 is due in theaters on July 29, 2022. The upcoming film is the follow-up to 2008’s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The franchise is currently celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, with Raiders of the Lost Ark hitting theaters back in 1981.
