Before making Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, director George Miller considered using CGI to de-age Charlize Theron so she could play the younger version of her character. Instead, Miller decided to go with Anya Taylor-Joy as the young Furiosa, with Alyla Browne portraying Furiosa as a child. But if you noticed that Browne resembled Taylor-Joy more and more as the character got older in the film, then you should know that you didn’t imagine it.
Via Variety, Taylor-Joy appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show and explained how Miller used AI to blend the faces of herself and Browne.
“George Miller had the idea very early on,” said Taylor-Joy. explained Taylor-Joy. The audience was already getting used to a new Furiosa. He wanted the transition from both actors playing her to be seamless. And so I did two days of the craziest things you could ever possibly imagine. And they mixed our faces together.”
Taylor-Joy went on to explain that roughly 35% of her face was used for Browne’s earliest scenes in the movie. But as Furiosa ages, more and more of Taylor-Joy’s facial features were placed on Browne until the former officially took over the role.
The actress also went on to explain why AI performers have Hollywood so worried.
“There’s a reason that our industry went on strike,” said Taylor-Joy. “It is something that is frightening, and I think if you’re going to use it you have to be honest about it and it always has to be consensual. It’s the lack of consent in anything in life that is the scary thing.”
