Astro Bot Sequel Announced For PS5, Coming September 6

Sony and developer Team Asobi have officially announced the latest game starring the lovable mascot Astro Bot. Surprisingly, the game appears to simply be called Astro Bot. A follow-up to the pack-in game Astro’s Playroom, which came bundled with every PS5 back in 2020, the new game looks to further cement Astro Bot’s reputation as a charming and joyful little fellow. It releases for PS5 on September 6.

The trailer showed off Astro in a bunch platforming challenges like riding a glider modeled after a PlayStation 5 DualSense controller, battling massive bosses like a monkey and an octopus, riding in a PS5 ship, and trying on a variety of costumes modeled after iconic PlayStation characters (including those from Uncharted, Journey, Ico, PaRappa, Shadow of the Colossus, and God of War). It was, in a word, adorable.

Prior to starring in Astro’s Playroom on PS5–which used the PS5’s hardware features as the aesthetic bases for its platforming levels and mechanics–Astro Bot also appeared in the PSVR game Astro Bot Rescue Mission. Developer Team Asobi was previously part of the larger Japan Studio, which Sony otherwise shut down in 2021.
