Marvel Studios is reportedly planning to hire Joe and Anthony Russo to direct the next two Avengers films. According to The Hollywood Reporter, talks are “early,” and nothing is locked down yet.
The Russo brothers most recently directed 2019’s Avengers: Endgame for Marvel. Deadpool and Wolverine director Shawn Levy was previously in talks to direct at least one new Avengers film. The report said Levy was offered the job before talks shifted to the Russo brothers.
This news is coming out just ahead of San Diego Comic-Con, during which Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige is giving a presentation regarding the future of Marvel movies.
Avengers 5, which was previously called Avengers: The Kang Dynasty before Marvel changed the title due to Jonathan Majors’ legal issues, is set for release in May 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars will follow in May 2027.
Avengers 5 could feature 60 or more MCU characters, a report said. Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Doctor Strange in the MCU, has said filming could begin next year.
The Russo brothers got their start in the TV world, directing episodes of Arrested Development and Community before diving into directing the movie You, Me, and Dupree (2006) and and producing Crashing (2007). Their first MCU film was 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Solider, which the brothers followed up with Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers Infinity War (2018), and then Avengers: Endgame (2019).
Joe Russo wrote the Netflix movies Extraction and Extraction 2, while the brothers teamed up again for Netflix’s The Gray Man starring Ryan Gosling. Their next movie is this year’s The Electric State for Netflix, a sci-fi film starring Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, Ke Huy Quan, Stanley Tucci, Brian Cox, Anthony Mackie, Billy Bob Thornton, and other big names.
