Your companions in Baldur’s Gate 3 have their own quirks and motivations. Gale, in particular, has a troublesome predicament, one where he has no choice but to keep devouring magical items. Our guide discusses the Wizard of Waterdeep, Gale’s companion quest in Baldur’s Gate 3. Likewise, please be reminded that this guide contains spoilers.
How to Complete Wizard of Waterdeep – Gale Companion Quest in Baldur’s Gate 3
The Baldur’s Gate 3 Wizard of Waterdeep quest begins quite early in the campaign. First, make sure you recruit Gale after leaving the Nautiloid crash site. As you continue your adventure, choose actions and responses that further increase his approval. This include those where you help out innocents, such as the Tiefling refugees.
How to Treat Gale’s Condition
Eventually, Gale will tell you about his condition: He once became the lover of the goddess Mystra. In his hubris, he unleashed volatile magic, and he had no choice but to keep this Weave within his chest.
Due to the exorbitant amounts of energy required, he has to keep absorbing items with magical properties. These are those with additional effects and boons, not just upgraded weapons and armor with a +1 in their names. Whenever Gale is in need of “nourishment,” an exclamation point will appear over his head:
Talk to him to hand over a magical item that you don’t need anymore. This will cure his malady, albeit temporarily. You can also pass a Persuasion check via dialogue, though Gale’s severe need will also cause him to suffer a penalty to Constitution rolls.
Gale’s Condition Worsens
After three instances where you give Gale a magical item, he’ll want to talk to you immediately. He’ll then admit that his condition is getting worse, and the items that you’ve been giving him aren’t enough to control the Weave. He does try to handle it for a while, and you won’t be asked to provide more gear pieces in the meantime (at least that’s how it was for us in our campaign).
Meeting Elminster
The next step in the Baldur’s Gate 3 Gale companion quest is to meet his mentor, Elminster. As of now, we’re unsure if his location is fixed. In our case, we spotted him north of the Rosymorn Monastery Trail. Here’s what you need to know:
Rosymorn Monastery Trail is part of the overland path that leads to Moonrise Towers. You can reach it by taking the exit to the side of the Goblin Camp, or the stone bridge in the Mountain Pass.Once you arrive in the Rosymorn Monastery Trail, follow the winding path to the northwest, just past the undead. Eventually, you’ll be at a cliffside area that connects to the Shadow-Cursed Lands.Elminster can be found waiting for you on the road. Talk to him in your camp, and he’ll tell you of Gale’s true purpose.
The Heart of the Absolute
Elminster claims that the Weave in Gale’s chest can be used to destroy the Heart of the Absolute. This changes the quest objective significantly:
You no longer need to give magical items to Gale. Elminster has cured him of his ailment temporarily.Gale gains the Netherese Orb Blast ability. If used, this triggers a cutscene where Gale stabs his chest, before causing a massive explosion that destroys a huge area. Basically, it’s a game over for you, even if you attempt to fast travel solo to a different location.Later at the end of Act 2, you’ll have to battle Ketheric Thorm. Once you reach the Mind Flayer Colony, you’ll see the Absolute emerging. Gale suggests blowing it up to finish the job. This leads to an abrupt campaign ending–yes, you do get to roll credits after the cutscene, though you can reload your previous save.Still, your character can convince him not to go through with the plan, as there might be a better way.
