Barbie has officially become See More
Barbie quickly became the biggest movie of the summer in just under a month with totaling ticket sales currently at $572 million in North America, but making $1.3 billion worldwide. The Mattel and Warner Bros. feature was released the same weekend as Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer biopic, making the memeable sensation Barbenheimer sweep online. There were millions of fans who opted for a double feature and the spectacle took over the pop culture zeitgeist.
“If there was one thing missing in this winning Barbie strategy, it was being able to put Greta’s singular vision on premium IMAX screens over the uber-competitive summer corridor. That Barbie continues to draw packed audiences around the world heading into its sixth weekend in release speaks to the quality of the film and the excitement audiences have for the story,” Goldstein and Cripps said in a joint statement. “We are so pleased to give them a chance to see Barbie, whether for the first or fifth time, in such an experiential format as IMAX.”
For comparison’s sake, Barbie hit its domestic gross in just 34 days versus The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s 138 days. Earlier this year, The Super Mario Bros. Movie became just the 10th animated film to make $1 billion worldwide.
With Barbie crossing over the $1 billion mark, director Greta Gerwig now holds the record for a high-grossing film helmed by a woman. The movie still sits behind Mario worldwide but has a good chance to overtake the animated flick in the coming weeks with this rerelease, even if by a few million.
