Leave it to Beetlejuice to put the fun back into funeral. And all it took to bring the gang back together was the death of Charles Deetz, the father of Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder). Lydia and her teenage daughter, Astrid (Jenna Ortega), have reunited with Lydia’s mother, Delia Deetz (Catherine O’Hara), to say goodbye to Charles. But as seen in the new trailer for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Astrid’s presence sets off a chain of events that unleashes the title character back into the land of the living.
Astrid has found the model of Winter River, Connecticut, that was created by the deceased couple, Barbara and Adam Maitland, from the first film. While neither Geena Davis nor Alec Baldwin reprising their roles as the Maitlands, their model holds the key to Beetlejuice’s comeback, and the ghost with the most intends to use it.
By Beetlejuice’s admittedly low standards, he’s kind of cleaned up in the decades since we last saw him. He now has a wife, as played by Monica Bellucci. But even if he could help himself, Beetlejuice’s chaotic personality spells trouble for all three of the remaining members of the Deetz family. That’s especially true for Lydia and Astrid, as they have a close encounter with one of the sandworms from the other side.
Tim Burton returned to direct the sequel from a script by Wednesday showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will hit theaters on September 6.
