Activision has now formally announced the new Zombies mode for Black Ops Cold War. The new mode is called Outbreak, and it’s coming to Call of Duty during Season 2 launch week, meaning it will arrive sometime between February 25 and March 3. A brand new trailer shows the mode in action.
“The next chapter of the Dark Aether story takes the agents of Requiem deep into the heart of Russia, where they’ll fight to survive their greatest challenges yet. Welcome to Outbreak: an entirely new, large-scale Zombies experience unlike any other,” developer Treyarch said.

Now Playing: Black Ops Cold War & Warzone – Official Season Two Cinematic Trailer
Outbreak continues the Dark Aether story and takes players to “massive play spaces” in the Ural Mountains. There, players will face off against new enemies, while they can earn new rewards and and intel.
“Whether it’s hunting down elite enemies using a satellite tracker, escorting a Rover that detects dimensional portals, or holding out against zombies in a confined Dark Aether zone, agents of Requiem will need to complete these investigations before they can Exfil… or risk entering a Dark Aether portal to a new region for even more rewards,” reads a line from the official description.
Frenzied Guard
To help players on their way, Treyarch is adding a new “Frenzied Guard” field upgrade. After activating this upgrade, all enemies will target you for a brief moment and only armor will take damage. As Treyarch says, this has the potential to be very useful to help a fellow operator who is swarmed by zombies.
Shatter Blast Ammo Mod
Zombies players can also look forward to the new Shatter Blast Ammo mod, which makes all bullets do explosive damage. Treyarch advises players to use this ammo mode to take down heavy zombies. You can get it from the Pack-a-Punch machine.
New Skill Tiers
There are also new skill tiers, bringing things up to Tiers IV and V. To advance to those tiers, you need to use Crystals, which you can unlock by completing Zombies and Outbreak missions. These tiers will help make your weapons, upgrades, and perks more powerful.
More details on these new tiers, and the Zombies Outbreak mode in general, will be announced in the coming days.
The original story follows below.
It appears Black Ops Cold War’s Season 2 refresh will include something special for Zombies fans. Call of Duty Tracker spotted a website for a new Zombies experience called “Outbreak.”
The page has since been removed, but an image from it states, “Welcome to Outbreak – a new, large-scale Zombies experience.” A soldier with an eye patch is seen in the teaser image, but there are no further details about this person or what Outbreak is all about.
Season 2 for Black Ops Cold War launches on February 25. Whether or not this Outbreak mode–if it is even real–is included at launch or something later in the season remains to be seen. Given that Season 2 is launching so soon, we expect Activision to share more details shortly.
Tryearch has now posted a teaser trailer for something related to Zombies, potentially Outbreak. Check it out below.
Before this, Treyarch released the cinematic trailer for Season 2, which takes players into the jungles of Laos on a rescue mission. The trailer also seems to suggest that a new crossbow, other weapons, and at least one new Operator will be coming in Season 2. Presumably a new Battle Pass will be offered in Season 2 as well.
