If you made it to the end of Netflix’s Extraction, starring Chris Hemsworth, you’re probably as surprised as we were that a sequel is coming. It’s happening, though, and Chris Hemsworth posted a new behind-the-scenes video to his Instagram of some fire footage to prove it. Literal fire footage.
Posted earlier today, Hemsworth wrote “Just another day on Extraction 2!!” alongside the video. In the video, you can see what looks like a prison riot or something like that. Then, as the shouting ramps up, two stuntmen who are on fire begin fighting in the background of the video. “Just another quiet day on Extraction 2,” Hemsworth says in the video. “Peaceful, serene, relaxing.”
Extraction hit Netflix on April 24, 2020, when we were just coming out of the Tiger King era of the pandemic. At the time, Netflix said that the film was projected to be its biggest-ever premiere at the time, with 90 million households set to watch in the movie’s first month of release.
The ending of Extraction was pretty ambiguous about the fate of Hemsworth’s character, Tyler Rake, but the original ending was going to be much more final, with the character definitively dying as an end to his redemption arc. Netflix exec Scott Stuber convinced director Sam Hargrave to go with the more “emotionally satisfying” ending, however, and that leads us to this sequel.
Shooting for Extraction 2 began shortly after the premiere of Extraction on the back of that movie’s success. Hargrave is back to direct; Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame co-director Joe Russo returned to write the script as well, having penned the first movie. Hargrave said in an update about the film that Netflix is considering spin-off movies for other characters as well. Extraction 2 does not yet have a release date, so it’s likely to hit Netflix in late 2022 at the very earliest.
