Civilization VII was revealed at Summer Game Fest after leaking a few hours ahead of the event. While the trailer only featured a new cinematic, it was announced that Civilization VII will be releasing in 2025 on PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch. It was confirmed during the reveal that it would be launching on both PC and consoles on the same date.
The cinematic trailer didn’t provide much of an insight into the new entry in the beloved series, but there was a tease at the end that a gameplay showcase would be coming in August. The trailer was followed up with a short message from Sid Meier himself, thanking fans and reiterating that the full gameplay reveal will come in August.
Last month, Summer Game Fest teased that the “next iteration” of a big 2K Games franchise would be showcased at the event, which takes place at 2 PM PT / 5 PM ET today on major streaming platforms. The original speculation focused on possible Borderlands 4 or BioShock reveals, though some are walking back their Borderlands 4 predictions now.
In early 2023, Firaxis Games confirmed a new Civilization game was in development. The announcement came with news of notable leadership changes, as Heather Hazen took over as studio head. XCOM 2 and Midnight Suns director Jake Solomon also left the team at this time. A few months later in May 2023, Firaxis was hit with layoffs.
The last mainline entry in the turn-based franchise was Civilization VI in 2016. The game did receive ports and DLC over the years, with a Leader Pass adding 18 powerful historical figures in 2022 and 2023. For more, check out GameSpot’s Civilization VI review.
