Cry Macho, the next movie from Hollywood veteran Clint Eastwood, now has a release date. The film will debut on October 22, 2021 both on HBO Max and in theaters.
Eastwood directed Cry Macho and he also stars in it as a struggling rodeo star who is enlisted to travel to Mexico to bring back his former boss’s son.
Cry Macho is based on the Richard Nash book that was originally published in the early ’70s. Nash, who has since passed away, told the Orlando Sentinel in 1985 the story of how no one wanted Cry Macho when it was a screenplay, so he wrote a novelization in two weeks that was much more widely enjoyed and sought-after.
“I had a screenplay called Macho that no one wanted,” Nash said. “It occurred to me to do a quick novelization. I got a $10,000 advance and completed it as Cry Macho in two weeks. It got surprisingly good reviews and the instant they appeared, three studios, all of which had rejected the screenplay, started to bid for this awful, little thing. I sold the rights to one. When they asked me to do the screenplay, I gave them what they had rejected–didn’t change a word–and they loved it!”
The movie version of Cry Macho has been in the works for decades, with actors like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Pierce Brosnan, and Roy Schneider all eyed for the lead role.
In fact, every 2021 WB movie–including Dune, The Matrix 4, The Suicide Squad and others–will release both on the streaming service and in theaters as part of the film studio’s new strategy for 2021. This strategy has not been without its detractors, including Tenet Christopher Nolan, who said HBO Max is the “worst streaming service.”
