The Banshees of Inisherin star Colin Farrell continues to express his excitement about The Penguin spin-off series for HBO Max. The actor admitted he wasn’t aware of the show while filming The Batman, but he definitely wanted to explore the character more while shooting.
Farrell spoke with Variety at the Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala, where he was asked whether he knew a series would spin-off from The Batman. He quickly replied, “God, no.” The Penguin actor followed that up by saying, “The only thing I had an idea was that I wasn’t nearly getting to explore the character as much as I wanted to.
“Because there was all this extraordinary work done by [makeup artists] Mike Marino and Mike Fontaine and his team, and I just thought it was the tip of the iceberg, pardon the pun, that we were getting to do the six or seven scenes that we did in the film. I was grateful for them, but I wanted more.”
On top of this, Farrell said The Penguin will start shooting in February. There isn’t a premiere date for the HBO Max series yet, though Palm Springs actress Cristin Milioti will play a lead role in The Batman spin-off. She’s reportedly set to portray Sofia Falcone, daughter of Carmine.
Speaking of Carmine Falcone (played by John Turturro in the film), Farrell previously revealed that The Penguin opens up with him walking through Falcone’s flooded office. The show takes place roughly one week after the events of The Batman.
Farrell also is game to star in The Batman 2. Though it’s unknown if director Matt Reeves has even finished writing the script for the planned film yet.
