One week away from the release of Deadpool and Wolverine, Marvel Studios just couldn’t resist releasing one last trailer that blew one of the biggest cameos in the film: Dafne Keen’s return as Wolverine’s clone daughter, Laura/X-23. Keen originated the role in 2017’s Logan, which was meant to be Hugh Jackman’s final appearance as Wolverine before he agreed to return for this film. Now, Keen has revealed that she was able to keep her comeback a secret by taking her cue from the way Andrew Garfield lied about Spider-Man: No Way Home.
“All the [inspiration] comes from Andrew Garfield,” said Keen during an interview with EW. “He is the master at this.” While Jackman’s Wolverine is not the same variant who met his end in Logan, Keen revealed that she is reprising the same version of Laura, who is now a young adult.
“It was wonderful to get to come back to that and explore that as a grownup,” added Keen. “Now understanding more parental rage so much more and bringing that to the table for her. I found that Laura in Logan stumbled into having a dad and then having lost her dad. We find her again really knowing how to appreciate–and with this kind of wiseness to her–how much her father means to her.”
But just because Laura is older, it doesn’t mean she’s stopped fighting. According to Keen, Laura is still physical and feral.
“That’s how I found her again,” noted Keen. “There wasn’t a lot of looking [for her]. She was just kind of in me. The first thing I did for Deadpool was stunt training before I shot anything. I put on the costume and was like, ‘Oh! She’s back.'”
Deadpool and Wolverine will hit theaters on July 26.
