Dan Harmon: Community Movie Is Now "Matter Of When And Not If"

After many years and countless memes, Community creator Dan Harmon says he fully intends to make good on the promise of delivering fans of the popular show a movie expanding, and potentially, concluding its story. According to The Wrap, Harmon has finished a story outline for the film, and negotiations are underway.

Which means, although the film is not yet guaranteed to actually happen, there is momentum in the right direction to hopefully one day come out. The phrase “six seasons and a movie” has become a rallying cry among Community fans, after popping up in the show repeatedly as the standard some of its characters hold for what a successful TV show should aspire to in its run. Season 6 of Community, the show’s final batch of episodes, aired on Yahoo! Screen in 2015. The previous five seasons aired on NBC.

Harmon gave an update on the film’s status while promoting Season 6 of Rick and Morty, which comes to Adult Swim on September 4. “Conversations and agreements are happening,” said Harmon. “There’s a story–who knows if we’ll end up sticking to it, but it was something we had to compile in order to take it out and court various venues. And now, negotiations happen.”

Added Harmon, the movie is no longer an “if” but a “when.” “When you put the percentage chances together it’s like you have to account for maybe the world blowing up or another virus happening. But as far as the industry is concerned, this is a matter of when and not if, for sure.”

Many of the show’s actors, including Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Ken Jeong, and Donald Glover have expressed their enduring enthusiasm for the show and a willingness to reprise their roles if a movie comes together.
