Dark Creators New Netflix Show 1899 Gets First Trailer

Jante Friese and Baran bo Odar, the minds behind the sci-fi Netflix series Dark, have a new project coming to the platform called 1899 and the first teaser for the project just hit YouTube on Netflix’s account for their UK and Ireland based streaming service. Check out the ominous teaser, featuring disjointed and multilingual voices over a slow zoom-in on a ship, right now.

According to the show’s synopsis, 1899 will be 8 episodes long and “follow the mysterious circumstances around the voyage of an immigrant ship from Europe to New York. The passengers, all of different backgrounds and nationalities, are united by their hopes and dreams for a new century and their future abroad. When they discover a second ship adrift on the open sea that had gone missing for months, their journey takes an unexpected turn. What they find on board will turn their passage to the promised land into a nightmare-like riddle, connecting each of the passenger’s pasts through a web of secrets.”

We all know, unexpectedly finding ghost ships that have been missing for years while out on a voyage is a sure fire recipe for disaster–just ask movies like Sunshine or Event Horizon.

The duo’s last project, Dark, was one of GameSpot’s favorite shows of 2020 after it wrapped up its three season run. That show had a similarly mind-bending premise involving portals in time that allowed the people living in a small German town to hopscotch back and forth between different points in time, creating an intricate web of impossible paradoxes.

Unfortunately, 1899 does not currently have a set release date. The teaser trailer is only to announce that production has been kicked off, meaning the show’s premiere date could still be a ways off.
