DC Relaunches Superman Comics With A New Man Of Steel

Metropolis has a new man of steel to periodically confuse for a bird or a plane, as Jon Kent will don the Kryptonian colors of his father Clark Kent and star in the new ongoing series Superman: Son of Kal-El. Featuring the creative team of Injustice: Gods Among Us and Suicide Squad writer Tom Taylor and artist John Timms, the new series will arrive in July 2021 and will replace the current Superman title.

Son of Kal-El won’t continue the storyline of the Future State event that DC introduced this year, which jumped forward in time to reveal a possible and darker timeline for the DC Universe. It’ll be set in the present-day DCU as Jon is challenged by the responsibility of being Superman and has to also prepare for a mysterious event that created a historical void in the 30th-century databanks of the Legion of Super-Heroes.

Now Playing: Superman & Lois: Who is Captain Luthor?

The original Superman won’t be missing completely though, as he’ll star in Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Daniel Sampere’s Action Comics series, Brian Michael Bendis’ and David Marquez’s Justice League, and a new mini-series that will see the last son of Krypton lead the infamous superteam The Authority. This series will see the return of All-Star Superman writer Grant Morrison, who teams up with artist Mikel Janin as Superman commands a team that includes Apollo. Midnighter, Manchester Black, the Enchantress, and Natasha Irons.

Rounding out the Superman family shake-up is Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by writer Tom King and artist Bilquis Evely. DC describes this series as a continuation of Kara Zor-El’s journey of self-discovery and emergence from the shadow of her famous cousin, with her supporting cast fleshed out by Krypto and their new friend Ruthye.

On the hunt for the fugitive Krem, the murderous King’s Agent, the heroes have to pursue their target on a cosmic bus that’s making a few dangerous stops on its route. If you’d prefer another take on Superman in a different medium, The CW’s Superman & Lois series is well worth watching. Starring Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch reprise as Clark Kent and Lois Lane, the show mixes superhero action with family drama in a surprisingly effective and charming manner.
