Deadpool 3 Director Shawn Levy On His Star Wars Movie: "I'm Putting Everything I Have Into It"

Director Shawn Levy, best known for his work on Netflix’s Stranger Things and Deadpool 3, has shared some insight on his Star Wars movie.

Back in November last year, it was announced that Levy was in talks to direct his own Star Wars movie following the release of Deadpool 3 and the final episodes of Stranger Things. Levy confirmed the report at the time, taking to Twitter to say, “Childhood me is losing his shit right now. Grown-up me is too.”

During a recent interview with Total Film magazine (via GamesRadar), Levy discussed how he was approached to develop and direct a brand-new Star Wars movie and how he’s going about approaching the galaxy far, far away.

“Getting that call was a great day,” Levy laughs. “I was in the edit room on All the Light We Cannot See, and I look at my phone, and it’s [Lucasfilm president] Kathy Kennedy. Thus began a conversation that led to her inviting me in to develop and make my Star Wars movie. I’m putting everything I have into it, because I love that world, and it is a privilege to get to join that galaxy.”

Finer details about the movie are unknown at this time, but we do know that Levy began the process of developing the movie this year. In a separate discussion with Collider, Levy provided an update on the project saying that he and his team began the process of developing the movie when the ongoing writers’ strike started in May. When SAG-AFTRA followed with their strike in July, all production was halted.

“So we are in that holding pattern that so much of our industry is in,” Levy said.

Alongside Levy’s movie, Lucasfilm confirmed that three new Star Wars films are in the works from directors James Mangold, Dave Filoni, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. Obaid-Chinoy’s movie will see the return of Daisy Ridley as Jedi Master Rey and will be set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker in the era of the New Jedi Order. Mangold’s movie will be set centuries in the past during the era Lucasfilm is calling the Dawn of the Jedi, while Filoni’s will be set during the New Republic era.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy previously confirmed that Thor director Taika Waititi is still set to direct his own Star Wars film and that The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy could still happen when Johnson has the time.
