Deadpool Director Reveals The Vision For His Star Wars Movie And What He Wants To Avoid

Shawn Levy, the director of Deadpool & Wolverine, has provided an update on his Star Wars movie and how he aims for the film to stand apart from those that came before it. He said in a new interview that one of his favorite elements of Star Wars is how the films are often about people connecting in special ways to serve something bigger than themselves, and he hopes to achieve this with his own film.

Speaking to Josh Horowitz on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, Levy said he also hopes that his Star Wars movie won’t be “redundant” to the other films, nor is it his aim for his film to “serve” a different Star Wars film that came before it or is coming up next.

“There’s only so many times that Star Wars movies can revisit the same section of the timeline. I don’t want to do a Star Wars movie that is redundant to others, nor am I interested in doing one that has to serve another movie,” Levy said. “I really wanted to craft something that felt organic to me, both in tone and characters. There is certainly the Force and a connection to something bigger than our individual selves. The way that that can make us powerful. Those themes, combined with visual delight and wish fulfillment, that’s Star Wars to me.”

Before this, Levy talked up his Star Wars film, saying, “I’m putting everything I have into it, because I love that world, and it is a privilege to get to join that galaxy.”

To date, no story details about Levy’s Star Wars film have been revealed, nor is there any concrete info about where it falls in the franchise’s timeline or when the film will come to theaters. The next Star Wars movie set for release is The Mandalorian and Grogu on May 22, 2026.

It’s possible Star Wars fans could get more news soon, as Disney’s D23 event begins tomorrow, August 9, so be sure to keep checking back with GameSpot for more.

In addition to the Star Wars movie, Levy is finishing up his directing work on Stranger Things: Season 5, which is the final season of the Netflix series.

Levy’s latest project was Deadpool & Wolverine, which is racking up major box office success right now. The film is approaching $900 million worldwide and is expected to pass $1 billion relatively soon.
