How to complete Phantom Oxcart in Dragon’s Dogma 2

The Phantom Oxcart quest comes from the Oxcart drivers in Vernworth. Basically, as you’re tackling main quest objectives in the capital, you might overhear them talking about a spectral transport that only appears at night. This sounds quite eerie, given that Oxcarts are one of your main fast travel methods, and drivers only start traversing the roads during the day.

Still, it’s up to you to investigate. Track the quest and pass time at an inn or a bench so that it’s evening. Then, head to the marked location.

The true nature of the Phantom Oxcart

Upon arriving at the marked location just north of Vernworth, you’ll realize what the Dragon’s Dogma 2 Phantom Oxcart truly is: it’s a transport that deals in the slave trade of pawns.

The corrupt soldier, Navil, makes a run for it, so chase after him. Once you catch up, he’ll admit his crime and hand you the Merchant’s Document. You can let him go (he’ll even give you gold), or you can send him to jail.

How to disguise yourself as a pawn

Regardless of your decision, return to Brant at the tavern and give him the Merchant’s Document. Brant suggests investigating the Phantom Oxcart further. You now have two choices:

Follow the Phantom Oxcart to see where it goes.Disguise yourself as a pawn and hitch a ride.

To be frank, we can’t confirm how to trigger the first option, since the transport just stays idle even though it hasn’t spotted us. As such, we opted to ride on it instead.

So, how exactly do you disguise yourself as a pawn? Simple: take off all your character’s weapons and armor–the rings don’t matter. If your character is in their underwear only, the coachman will tell you to join the other pawns at the back. This also nets you the “Are We There Yet?” achievement.

The journey from Vernworth to Bakbattahl

The Phantom Oxcart will then travel along the road at night. The driver will also muse about pawns and how much he loathes them. A couple of notable incidents will occur and you need to follow some requirements:

Goblins will attack the vehicle at night. Leave the cart and eliminate all of them without wearing any weapon or armor. The coachman will remain fooled, and the cart will continue to travel along the road.Upon arriving at Checkpoint Rest Town, some guards will start abusing the pawns. Do not attack them and just take the punishment.

Fighting for your life and potential issues

Finally, the Phantom Oxcart will arrive at the southern gate of Bakbattahl. Once all the pawns are asked to kneel, the guards will notice that you’re an impostor. They will turn hostile, which means you can now wear your weapons and armor again.

Here’s what you need to know about this encounter:

You have to fight over half a dozen Bakbattahl guards. Most of them are Fighters, who will shield bash you to death.Your own pawns will appear alongside you. However, it seems they’re bugged, since they’ll only stand idle. In fact, you might need to revive them a few times since they’ll keep getting incapacitated.Try to hold your own against the guards and defeat them as best you can.

Once your foes have been beaten, you can return to Vernworth. Report your findings to Commander Brant and give him the Labor Requisition Orders. This completes the Dragon’s Dogma 2 Phantom Oxcart quest. You’ll receive 4,000 XP, 14,500 gold, and a Ring of Momentum (i.e. moderate boost to maximum stamina) for your efforts.

Fierce foes and loyal companions await you as you journey onward in Dragon’s Dogma 2. For other tips and strategies, you can visit our guides hub.
