In 2022, prior to the release of Avatar: The Way of Water, Edie Falco made headlines when she said she assumed the film had already come out and flopped because “I didn’t hear anything about it.” She said she had filmed her scenes four years prior and was busy with other projects so she didn’t follow what happened with The Way of Water. Now, Falco says she caught some flack for those comments.
Appearing on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show With Julia Cunningham, Falco said she heard from writer-director James Cameron’s camp that he wasn’t happy. “I heard straight from the source who was with him when he heard that I had said that, that it did not go well,” she said (via EW). “I took a lot of flack for that.”
“All I was saying is I’m a jerk. I never know what’s going on with my life,” she added. “I got a lot of phone calls from a lot of very important people.”
Falco played General Ardmor in The Way of Water, a character who gives orders to kill Sam Worthington’s main character, Jake Sully. Falco said she didn’t stay up to date with The Way of Water after filming her scenes because that’s the way she works.
“I make these things, I do the job, I say goodbye to everybody, and then I’m done,” she said. “Then I’m onto the next thing. I have no idea what happens to things after I’m done.”
Falco went on to say that when she originally commented on The Way of Water, it wasn’t done to upset anyone or to suggest the film wouldn’t do well at the box office. Instead, she said those things to give people an insight into how unaware she is. “I am a dolt,” she said with a laugh.
The Way of Water, of course, was a massive commercial success, bringing in $2.3 billion at the global box office on its way to becoming the No. 3 highest-grossing movie in history.
Falco, who is perhaps best known for her starring roles on The Sopranos and Nurse Jackie, is set to return in 2026’s Avatar: Fire and Ash.
