Fallout Creators Tease Big Season 2 Plans For Lucy

Prime Video’s adaptation of Fallout hit the platform over the spring and became an instant hit. Some questions were circling about how the series could work before the premiere. Would it be compared too much to HBO’s The Last of Us? What was the story since it’s not a direct one-to-one remake, but presented a story that takes place within the world itself? Both proved to be a non-issue with huge ratings and great acclaim. Oh, and Fallout made Walter Goggins an unintended sex symbol, yet again.

The story focuses on three very different survivors Lucy (Ella Purnell), Maximus (Aaron Moten), and the Ghoul (Walton Goggins) having to make their way through a nuclear wasteland sprinkled with heroic moments, intense violence, and a hint of humor for good measure. Now, there was a debate on what Lucy’s in-game stats would have been for the series, and the showrunners have teased some big plans for her in Season 2, which could certainly alter those numbers.

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet talked about the lessons they’ve learned going into the next season, what lies ahead for Lucy now having to understand the truth about her reality, and how many seasons they’re aiming for.

“We’ve talked about a billion seasons as a jokey way to evade the question because we don’t control that,” Wagner said. “So our hope is to end every season with a semi-satisfying, semi-open-ended kind of shape. Look, we’ve talked about three seasons and we’ve talked about five seasons. Given the success of the show, five is suddenly feeling a little more appealing. But the industry is a temperamental thing and we kind of have to go into each season being like, ‘This is our last.'”

As for Lucy’s evolution for Season 2, Robertson-Dworet praised Purnell’s abilities and their initial worries when writing her.

“We were very scared that our main character was a bit annoying because she’s a very privileged person and we kind of resent her for that,” the showrunner said. “She comes from the world of haves and she goes into a world of have nots, and she certainly starts the season thinking she knows better than them and being a little judgy of the people she meets for what they are willing to do to survive. Knowing that people are open to Max being a morally ambiguous character is always appreciated.”

Robertson-Dworet continued with how Lucy will survive this season and if she can overcome her sheltered life and adapt.

“Will Lucy be able to hang on to her core? It’s sort of a nature vs. nurture question,” she explained. “Has her time in a happy cozy vault steeled her against that? We will find out. What we’re already into in Season 2 is exploring how far we want to push this character, how much do we want to see her hang onto to herself. It becomes the game of the show in its own way.”

While Season 2 doesn’t have a premiere date announced yet, you can catch up with the entirety of Season 1, streaming on Prime Video.
