DC has released the first teaser trailer for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which has Black Manta on the warpath after failing to defeat Aquaman in the first movie. The full trailer, meanwhile, is coming this Thursday, September 14.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II reprises his role from the first film as Black Manta, and he’s stopping at nothing to take down Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and avenge his father’s death. Black Manta says in the trailer, “I’m going to kill Aquaman and destroy everything he holds dear.” The footage then cuts to a home on fire, potentially the home of Aquaman’s father from the first movie, with Aquaman arriving on the scene with a pained look on his face.
In The Lost Kingdom, Black Manta has the power of the Black Trident weapon, which “unleashes an ancient and malevolent force.” Aquaman needs help to fight Black Manta, so he turns to his half-brother and former king of Atlantis, Orm, who is played by Patrick Wilson.
“Together, they must set aside their differences in order to protect their kingdom and save Aquaman’s family, and the world, from irreversible destruction,” reads a line from the film’s description.
Amber Heard returns to play the Queen of Atlantis, Mera, while Nicola Kidman plays the fierce leader Atlanna. Dolph Lundgren returns to portray King Nereus again, with Randall Park portraying Dr. Stephen Shin.
James Wan, who directed the first Aquaman, returns for The Lost Kingdom. The screenplay was written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, based on a story from Wan & David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Jason Momoa & Thomas Pa’a Sibbett.
The Lost Kingdom premieres in theaters on December 20, 2023. Currently, the film’s stars cannot do promotion for the film due to the ongoing Hollywood labor strikes. This was part of the reason why Warner Bros. delayed some of its 2023 films, including Dune: Part II, to 2024.
