Five Nights At Freddy's Movie: Do "Not Expect An R-Rated Version," Director Says

While there might be rumors of an R-rated cut of the upcoming Five Nights at Freddy’s film, that doesn’t seem to be in the cards for the horror movie. Director Emma Tammi stated they’re happy with the original intent of aiming for a PG-13 rating for the project.

Speaking with Forbes, Tammi (The Wind) explained why Five Nights at Freddy’s is rated PG-13 and a more violent version isn’t happening at this time. “On the one level, we wanted to be inclusive of the younger audiences and knew we were going to hit the PG-13 rating, but for the audience that also wanted that level of violence, if you will, or at least insinuation of violence, we really wanted to still include elements that felt dark,” she said.

Tammi discussed finding a balance in Five Nights at Freddy’s “to ensure that we were showing the right amount and doing creative things to insinuate what was happening or show what was happening without fully seeing it to still fit in that PG-13 category.” As such, the director stands by the current version. “I would say not to expect an R-rated version on this one,” she said. Previously, the filmmaker talked about how Five Nights at Freddy’s is inspired by Joker and director Steven Spielberg.

Five Nights at Freddy’s has come together quickly to premiere October 27 in theaters and on Peacock. The horror movie, a Blumhouse production, only started filming in February in New Orleans.

In August, Five Nights at Freddy’s got its second tense trailer, showing the animatronics coming to life to end other people’s lives. The movie stars Josh Hutcherson (Hunger Games franchise), Matthew Lillard (Scream, Hackers), Elizabeth Lail, Kat Conner Sterling, Piper Rubio, and Mary Stuart Masterson. It’s based on a video game franchise that began in 2014.
