Freddy Fazbear (and all his terrifying friends) are headed to the big screen with Five Nights At Freddy’s, a feature film based on the popular horror game scheduled to arrive in theaters later this year. Though the film’s release is still a few months away, Universal Pictures is giving audiences an early peek at the live-action thriller via a new trailer.
With a story by Five Nights At Freddy’s developer Scott Cawthon, the film seems very similar to the game franchise upon which it is based. The Hunger Games‘ Josh Hutcherson stars as Mike Schmidt, a single father who takes on an extra job as a security guard at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria, a once-popular family establishment known for its band of animatronic animals. The film seems to be sticking closely to the source material, with the game’s animatronics–and even its infamous cupcake–appearing in the trailer with next to no alterations to their appearance.
But the film isn’t an exact replica of the game. In the original game, the player-character spent their nights monitoring security cams alone. The film, however, sees the protagonist bringing along his young daughter Abby to work with him.
“I will work, and you will sleep,” Mike is seen telling his daughter in the new trailer.
Of course, chaos ensues and sleep is nowhere to be found. At one point, YouTuber CoryxKenshin–known in part for his love of the franchise–makes a cameo in the film’s trailer, though it’s unclear if his character will play a significant role in the film.
Interestingly, the trailer also contains nods to other, more recent entries in the Five Nights franchise–especially Five Nights At Freddy’s: Security Breach. The mere presence of Mike’s daughter is an obvious reference to the child protagonist of Security Breach, which is currently awaiting a DLC that will feature a young female protagonist. But the similarities don’t stop there–the film trailer also features the appearance of a blonde security guard named Vanessa, who has a strikingly similar appearance to the female guard in Security Breach (also named Vanessa).
Another interesting nod to Security Breach comes at the end of the trailer, in a very short clip that depicts Freddy and Abby holding hands outside the pizzeria. The scene also highlights the biggest difference between Security Breach and the rest of the game franchise: Freddy himself. In all previous games, Freddy is an enemy who will terrorize the player with jumpscares and high-pitched shrieks. In Security Breach, however, Freddy is the only non-evil animatronic, teaming up with the child protagonist and protecting them from harm. Based on his actions in the trailer, this calmer, kinder Freddy may be the one audiences are introduced to when Five Nights At Freddy’s hits the big screen on October 27, 2023.
