FX's Shogun Miniseries Gets First Trailer

FX’s Shogun, based on James Clavell’s bestselling novel, is set in Japan in the year 1600, at the dawn of a century-defining civil war, telling two stories that could bring an empire to its knees and we have our first look with a brand-new trailer.

Lord Yoshi Toranga (Japanese action film icon Hiroyuki Sanada) is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents are ready to rebel against him. At the same time, a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village. Check out the trailer below.

The narrative is split between Toranga and the political aspect, with Captain John Blackthorne (Peaky Blinders’ Cosmo Jarvis) on the other side facing his own troubles. Blackthrone comes bearing secrets that could help Toranaga tip the scales of power and make a killer blow to the formidable influence of Blackthorne’s enemies–Jesuit priests and Portuguese merchants.

Toranaga and Blackthorne find themselves bound by fate with the addition of their translator, Toda Mariko (Anna Sawai), a mysterious Christian noblewoman. While in servitude, Mariko must reconcile her budding companionship with Blackthorne, as well as her commitment to the faith that saved her, and her duty to her late father.

This is actually Shogun’s second adaptation with another series that was made by Paramount Television in September of 1980 and starred Richard Chamberlain, Toshiro Mifune, and Yoko Shimada.

FX’s Shogun premieres February 2024.
