HBO has ordered a new Game of Thrones prequel TV series. A new show called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, which is based on George R.R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg book series, is officially on the way, WB Discovery announced during its “Max” event.
The series will adapt Martin’s book series that follows Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and a young Aegon V Targaryen (Egg). The books take place 90 years before the events of A Song of Ice and Fire.
“A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg,” reads a line from the show’s announcement (via Variety). “Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”
Martin is a writer and executive producer on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. It’s one of multiple Game of Thrones shows that HBO is developing. House of the Dragon is coming back for a second season, there is a Jon Snow series in development, and another prequel series reportedly focusing on Aegon I Targaryen’s rise to power is in the works.
While House of the Dragon Season 2 and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms are definitely coming, the other shows may never come to fruition, as often happens in Hollywood.
HBO Max is changing names to become simply “Max” beginning on May 23. It will include content from both HBO and Discovery+. The ad-free version will cost $16/month, matching the current price of HBO Max. An ad-based version will be available for $10/month.
